Google Gemini now calls businesses for its users: what your front desk has to handle

On September 24, 2026, Google began a limited test of Gemini "Call for Me", a feature that lets Gemini call businesses on a user's behalf to check hours, ask about availability, get a service quote, or book and move an appointment. It runs on Pixel 11 phones in the U.S. and calls U.S. numbers only. AI assistants are starting to phone businesses for their users, and the business that answers clearly and offers a slot is the one the assistant can book.

What to do: answer every call or text back within one to two minutes, give a price range and the next slot in one sentence, and publish hours, prices and booking steps as plain text on your site. The same setup serves AI and human callers.

What Google launched on September 24

"Call for Me" is an experimental Gemini feature that calls from the user's own number. According to Google's help page, Gemini can call businesses to:

  • get business hours, product availability, service quotes and other information;
  • book, confirm and manage appointments and reservations;
  • navigate automated phone menus and wait on hold, as TechCrunch reported.

The user confirms the task before dialing, can follow a live transcript or take over, and gets a written summary, transcript and recording afterwards.

What changes for businesses that book by phone

An AI caller asks structured questions and reports back in writing. The customer reads a summary of what your business said and can ask the assistant to call the next business on the list right away.

At I/O on May 19, 2026, Google also said Search would call businesses for users in categories such as home repair, beauty and pet care, with a U.S.-wide rollout planned for this summer.

How an AI caller reaches a booking or a dead end AI assistant calls hours · price · booking Your phone line Answered price + next slot in one sentence Missed text-back, 1–2 min + booking link Booking in the summary the customer's assistant reports back
Two paths to a booking: a clear answer, or an instant text-back.

Two consequences for service firms:

  1. Unanswered calls and vague answers show up in writing. A voicemail box or "call us back tomorrow" gives the assistant nothing to book.
  2. Sensitive details stay with people. Gemini will not relay health or card details, so clinics and law firms still need a human step after the booking.

Canada: no date yet, so use the lead time

Google has announced no date for Canada, as iPhone in Canada noted on September 24. Firms with U.S. phone numbers will start receiving these calls as Google widens the test. Elsewhere, the setup that handles AI callers already recovers missed human calls. Google offers an opt-out from Gemini calls; for a business that books by phone, that closes a channel.

A five-point checklist for your first line

A ready first line answers hours, availability, price and booking in one pass, day or night.

  1. Answer or route every call; send overflow to a second person or an answering layer.
  2. Text back every missed call within one to two minutes with a booking link.
  3. Give staff one-sentence answers for hours, availability, price range and booking.
  4. Publish the same facts as plain text on your site so assistants and AI search can quote them.
  5. Tag calls that open with an AI disclosure as a separate CRM source.
